How to connect a doorbell? – choose a model which meets your expectations

A practical and aesthetically pleasing doorbell can become an unusual decoration of the home interior. It is hard to imagine not having it, so sooner or later, we have to decide which model to choose. When it comes to the doorbells available on the market, you can easily connect each of them yourself. You can choose from standard doorbells, connected to the power supply or modern, wireless ones. Still most popular wired models, which consist of a button and a chime, have to be connected using wires. The installation of this type of doorbells requires considerably more effort than the installation of modern models. If you are not qualified or skilled in working with electrical systems, it is better to ask someone more experienced to help you.

How to install a doorbell?

When deciding on a traditional solution in the form of a wired doorbell, we must have an installation at home ready for its connection. Most often it is installed already at the construction stage of the building. The doorbell wiring must be connected to a wire with a cross section of 0.5 to 2.5 mm. It is important that the phase wire, which is part of each bell installation, is properly protected against overload or short circuit. The work begins with disconnecting the bell installation from the power supply. To make sure that there is no current flowing in it, use a measuring device. Then, using a screwdriver, prise the clips on the bell body to remove the cover. In the place where it is to be placed, make two holes of the same size as those in the device. Pull the installation wires through the holes in the doorbell base and screw it to the wall at the desired location with screws that will be embedded in the wall plugs. Next, remove about 1.5 cm of the insulation from the end of the wires and press down the clamping levers into which the wire ends are inserted. Release the levers and gently pull the wires to make sure that everything is stable and correctly installed. Finally, we can install the cover of the device on the base fixed to the wall and supply voltage to test the doorbell. If everything is working properly, you can enjoy the doorbell connected by yourself.

What kind of wire for a doorbell? – or maybe without a wire?

Wireless doorbells using radio waves do not require wiring, so they can be installed in almost any place without the need to make holes the surface of the walls. They are supplied from batteries, which should be replaced periodically. Their modern design will suit all interiors decorated in this style. If we want to install the device outdoors, in a place where it will be exposed to weather conditions such as snow, rain or low temperatures, we should choose a doorbell with the appropriate IP44 protection class. For safety reasons, however, it is advisable to install it in a sheltered location. The volume of the device is adjustable, so we can easily adjust the intensity of the sound even for a very sensitive person. During the installation, attention should also be paid to any possible obstacles that may hinder the transmission of the radio signal. It is also not recommended to fix the device near metal elements. A wireless doorbell is an easy solution, which will work wherever the installation of standard models is impossible or difficult. This option is also suitable for detached houses, as the doorbell can be attached at the entrance gate.

Both types of doorbells have their advantages and disadvantages. When deciding on a particular model, we should consider the functionality of the device, safety during use, as well as aesthetic aspects, its durability and pleasant sound to the ear.
